Forensic Types of Ischemia and Asphyxia

چکیده
References 313 In Chap. 13 we described the sequelae of disturbances of the pure primary insults of hypoxia, ischemia, and hypoglycemia. Under common pathologic conditions, a combination of different types of metabolic disturbances regularly occurs. The clinical and morphological features, therefore, may partly overlap. This overlapping of processes is especially important in surviving victims, especially in cases of ischemia (or stagnant anoxia) as well as in cases of prolonged hypoxia. In this part we will describe the primary forensic types of ischemia and asphyxia, but we are also aware of natural types of asphyxia, i.e., diseases of the lungs (prevention/reduction of the gaseous interchange by pneumonia, edema, etc.) and the heart (prevention/reduction of the circulation of oxygenated blood). From the forensic point of view we have to distinguish three types of ischemia/asphyxia: ▬ Type 1: Suffocation ▬ Type 2: Strangulation ▬ Type 3: Chemical asphyxiation

Tau protein as a biomarker for asphyxia: A possible forensic tool?
Asphyxial death has been a problem for forensic investigations due to the absence of a validated biomarker for the diagnosis of this event. Recently, research on brain affection by asphyxia raised hopes on the possible use of CNS markers for asphyxia. The cytoskeletal proteins seem to be attractive targets as they are vulnerable to hypoxia and can be affected in asphyxial deaths. Tau, an import...
متن کاملInflicted compressional asphyxia of a child.
Compressional or traumatic asphyxia is a well recognized entity to most forensic pathologists. The vast majority of reported cases have been accidental. The case reported here describes the apparent inflicted compressional asphyxia of a small child. A review of mechanisms and related controversy regarding proposed mechanisms is discussed.
متن کاملAn unusual suicide case by combination of choking and hanging.
A 40-year-old man was found dead in his prison cell, hanging on a twisted bandage tightened around his neck. His permanent metal tracheostomy tube was completely corked with a piece of paper wrapped with transparent cellophane from a cigarette case. After police investigation and complete autopsy, suicide was determined as the manner of death. Although suicides by 1 form of asphyxia are relativ...
متن کاملDiagnostic Efficacy of Cardiac Isoenzyme Ck-mb in Pericardial Fluid for Postmortem Diagnosis of Myocardial Infarction
Sudden cardiac death due to acute myocardial infarction is the most prevalent cause of death in adults and constitutes a significant portion of the autopsies that are conducted by Forensic pathologists in our country. Serum cardiac isoenzymes creatine phosphokinase-MB (CK-MB) has high sensitivity and specificity for cardiac damage and it is routinely used for clinical diagnosis of myocardial in...
متن کاملFatalities related to medical restraint devices-asphyxia is a common finding.
A total of seven detailed death investigations is reported where death occurred while being restrained by a belt or a protective cover. The casualties were elderly persons who mostly showed considerable pre-existing diseases, especially dementia and coronary atherosclerosis. Concerning the cause of death, three groups were differentiated: (I) mechanical asphyxia from strangulation. (II) Mechani...
